Ethicality & Sustainability

Let's see how many times I can type ethical and sustainable...

Ethicality and Sustainability go hand in hand. Usually when people talk about sustainability this is an umbrella that ethical practices fall under. After all, how can you sustain a practice that isn't ethical?

Ethicality: "the state or quality of being moral, in accordance with the standards of right and wrong."

Another umbrella term. This relates to:

the duty of care employers & stakeholders have on their workers

the quality of an item & ensuring it's fit for purpose

the damage from the item being created

the price being charged & how that money is distributed.

Ethicality is something I feel so strongly about. It's one of the main reasons I started Raw Flora. In the fashion industry there's a lot that needs to change to make it even close to being ethical.

Sustainability: "the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time."

And/Or

"prevention of depletion to natural or physical resources, so that they will remain available for the long term."

Both of these definitions are relevant to businesses and the fashion industry. Typically people are talking about resources and helping the environment when talking about sustainable clothing.

This relates to:

using materials that are 'friendly' to the environment

minimising waste through making to order & using scraps

creating long lasting items and promoting repairing, reusing & reselling

not designing on-trend items that will be out of fashion in 1-2 years.
